AN OPEN LETTER TO

BELIEVERS IN VACCINATION

September 29, 2006

To Believers in Vaccination:

I hereby make the following offer to any person or persons who believe vaccination works to promote human or animal health.

I hereby offer a page on my nonprofit's web site for an open, public discussion on the efficacy of vaccination.

The discussion will be "open" and "public" in the sense that it will be posted on the web site of the California 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation Natural Woman, Natural Man, Inc.

The discussion will be limited to the subject of what science has to say about the efficacy of vaccination. There will be no character assassinations, name-calling, emotional outbursts, or other diversionary tactics. Any additions to the discussion containing non-science-related text will be seen as an admission by the participant that his or her belief in vaccine efficacy is belief, not science.

The discussion will begin by the participant's answering the following question:

"Since there are no long-term (three years or longer) controlled studies (two matched groups: one vaccinated, the other not vaccinated) of any vaccine in any country in any time period, and since epidemiological evidence does not demonstrate that vaccines have prevented any disease, what evidence supporting vaccine efficacy do you propose to submit?"

The reason I have introduced this offer is that over the years a few M.D.s have contacted me to argue in support of the efficacy of vaccination. But when I asked them to refer me to a single long-term study backing up their position, they simply declined to write back.

Please note: None of the doctors wrote back to say, "Since I haven't found any long-term studies to support my view that vaccines promote health, I've decided to revise my position on vaccine efficacy, or at least question it."

I have found that, in the field of science, it is always the indoctrinated (those imbued with beliefs able to be overturned by opening the eyes) who refuse to engage in a polite dialogue on the subject at hand. It is always -- 100% of the time -- the indoctrinated who back out of the conversation. When an indoctrinee is challenged, there is the initial rise in blood pressure, and then there is the righteous outburst (e.g., "That's outrageous! I'll have nothing to do with this!"), and then there is the righteous turning up of the nose, and then there is the righteous walking away.

I have had my fill of private conversations of this sort. I thought it might be interesting to make them public.

In health,
